Assailant - Jayvon Hatchett
19-year-old black male Jayvon Hatchett stabbed a white AutoZone employee seven times after "watching Facebook videos of police shootings."
Hatchett entered the parts store asking for a thermostat and after he was informed the store didn't have his part he started to stab the employee multiple times after he turned away from Hatchett. He was captured on surveillance footage entering the store and shortly after, running away from the scene. His home is a short distance away from the AutoZone where the crime was committed.
Hatchett smiled as he told a detective that he chose a white man at random and stabbed him in the neck. In court testimony, the detective said Hatchett told him he "felt the need to find a white male to kill."
The 52-year-old victim, Mike, was stabbed seven times, four times in the neck, once in the back, the chest and the hand. He is in "critical condition and has a long road to recovery," according to his GoFundMe.
According to court records, Hatchett was free on bond after being charged just three days before the stabbing with criminal damage to property. Six months ago he was arrested for two felonies including aggravated assault.
A GoFundMe for Mike was created on August 27, 2020 to pay for his medical and recovery expenses.
On September 5, 2020, Hatchett's white jail cellmate Eddie Nelson Jr. was found beaten to death in his cell. Hatchett is suspected in the attack.
